Johnson Presents IRA Distribution Planning Strategies at AALU

[Seattle, WA; June 6, 2003]— Eleanor Johnson, Managing Principal for Highland Capital Brokerage Seattle, the brokerage distribution arm of Highland Capital Holding Corporation, presented “IRA Distribution Planning Strategies” at the Association of Advanced Life Underwriters (AALU) 46th annual meeting. The meeting, attended by more than 1,200 of the nation’s leading advisors of insurance and financial products and services, was held in Washington, D.C.

Johnson’s presentation focused on planning opportunities created by the 2002 final 401(a)(9) regulations: which define the new qualified plan minimum distribution rules. Johnson commented on how these changes have simplified the lifetime Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and created significant flexibility in post-mortem planning.

“The new rules create an opportunity for advisors to focus on the planning aspects of qualified plan distribution planning instead of just how to comply with the rules,” stated Johnson.

Johnson used several case studies to illustrate how carefully meeting these requirements will allow clients to take advantage of income tax deferral into the next generation. Johnson outlined the following:

  • The power of the “Stretch IRA”.
  • How to integrate beneficiary designation planning with estate planning for qualified plans.
  • How choices of various beneficiaries impact post-mortem distribution options.
  • The use of post-mortem planning techniques to manage the timing of income tax recognition for IRAs.
  • The impact of Estate Tax Reform on qualified plans and IRAs.
  • The importance of life insurance as a means to create liquidity in order to accomplish the “Stretch IRA”.
